Satisfactory Academic Progress

Students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 and must complete all graduation requirements in a maximum of 40 months in Acupuncture or 54 months in Oriental Medicine from the initial date of program enrollment. Students who fall below a 2.0 cumulative grade average will be dismissed from the program. Additionally, for students receiving federal financial aid, after one year of attendance and at the end of each additional year thereafter, a student who has not passed at least 2/3 of all class hours attempted in their program of study will lose federal financial aid eligibility. Since most students begin in the fall and attend in the summer, the 2/3 rate will be calculated after the summer quarter each year for all federal financial aid recipients. There is no probationary period for unsatisfactory grades or an unsatisfactory rate of completion (less than 2/3). Students dismissed or who lose federal financial aid eligibility for unsatisfactory academic progress may petition for reinstatement. The petition should indicate if the cause of unsatisfactory academic progress was due to the death of a relative of the student or an injury or illness of the student. Individual cases will be reviewed by an academic committee made up of two faculty members and one administrator. The committee will make recommendations regarding reinstatement to the program and for federal financial aid eligibility based on the student's plan to implement a course of action which will overcome the cause of the unsatisfactory performance.

If a student misses or fails a midterm examination, they must pass a different version of the midterm before taking the final exam. Students who miss or fail a final examination must pass a different version of the final exam by the second week of the next quarter. Otherwise, the late submission fee applies. If, at the end of the quarter, there are any missed or failed exams or assignments or the 80% attendance requirement (including makeup work) that has not been successfully completed, the grade of "I", incomplete, will be assigned. If any elements remain uncompleted at the second week of the next quarter the incomplete "I" will become an "F" and the class must be repeated. Students who makeup or retake an examination and do not receive a 70% passing grade must schedule a tutoring session and are allowed to retake a third version of the exam. The maximum grade for all retake exams, either midterms or finals, is 70%. There is no restriction on grades for makeup work. Students who fail to pass the class with a score of 70% or higher after the second retake exam will receive a failing grade of "D" or "F" which will be included in the GPA. Students with a failing grade after the second retake must repeat the course.

Students may give notification of withdrawal from a class prior to the final examination and receive a "W". A "W" is not considered for credit in the grade point average, but is considered in the rate of completion calculation. Later withdrawals initially receive a grade of "I" which is not considered for credit or in the grade point average, but is considered in the rate of completion calculation. "I"s that are not resolved will be converted to "F"s which are not considered for credit but are included in both grade point and rate of completion calculations.
